Simplifying Storyboarding with AI Character Creation

Oh, hi! Happy Easter Sunday.

I assume everyone reading this has a basic understanding of AI tools and has dabbled in them a bit. Email me if I'm overestimating you, LOL. Maybe some quick 101s are needed to make this whole thing more accessible.

This week, I've been writing for a client and putting together a deck. It's the first one in a while where I've had to make it pitch-ready, working in a deck template and finding imagery. I used Midjourney for the artwork – such a time-saver that helped bring a few ideas to life.

I always thought this would be a game-changer when – instead of just getting whatever the machine decided, you could create and reuse a central character to illustrate your themes or tell a story.

Well, now you can. Here's a quick illustration how. Let's imagine we're making a film for FedEx, cause that’s the opposite of what I’ve been doing:

1. Create a lead character (a FedEx employee, in uniform, head and shoulders, female).

2. Choose your favorite from some of the provided options – with some tweaking, you could create something very specific.

Next, let's place her in scenes using the [- cref] command. Basically, this command followed by the URL of your source image tells Midjourney to use this as a reference point for whatever you're describing.

- FedEx employee making a delivery in a high-rise apartment building - cref URL

- FedEx employee driving a delivery truck on the freeway - cref URL

- FedEx employee in the breakroom at the depot, laughing and talking with coworkers - cref URL

Now, you can get real specific with lenses, aspect ratios, cameras, environments – the possibilities are endless.

But can we all take a minute to appreciate how easy it just became to put together a storyboard or sell an idea?

Okay, moment over… go enjoy your eggs.

As you were.
